Alumni-in-Residence: Sign Up for Office Hours with Dr. Michael Bates '79, Vice President for Oncology Strategy, Medical and Scientific Affairs at Cepheid

Dr. Michael Bates '79 is the Vice President for Oncology Strategy, Medical and Scientific Affairs at Cepheid, a molecular diagnostics company. 

After graduating from Amherst with a degree in biology, he completed his MD and trained in both cardiology and infectious diseases before leaving clinical work to pursue a career in biotechnology. For the last 20 years, Dr. Bates has worked to develop diagnostic tools for HIV and cancer, with a special focus on deploying those tools in Africa and other parts of the developing world. 

Dr. Bates will be available to talk individually with students curious about medical, research, or public health careers. Students interested in the application of medical school training to other spaces, such as biotech, should especially sign up to discuss their questions and decision-making.
