Houston Program - Insaan-Amherst Fellowship Program - 2020

The intern selected for this opportunity will not receive a wage from the internship organization; however, the intern will receive a stipend in the amount of $4,500 from the College to help facilitate participation in the internship.

The Insaan Group is looking for bright, highly-motivated candidates to apply to their inaugural Insaan Fellowship Program. 

FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTION
The Insaan Fellowship is designed to provide one Amherst student each year with an enriching global experience that will deepen or awaken their intellectual and moral consciousness about the plight of the poor and expose them to the various models emerging to tackle, innovate and ultimately find solutions to poverty.

As a fellow, an Amherst student will be selected to spend 8 weeks during the summer working in a developing country in East Africa, South Asia, or the Middle East at one of the social enterprises supported by the Insaan Group. The selected fellow will receive a stipend from the Loeb Center for Career Exploration and Planning and will receive assistance from the Insaan Group to settle in the host country, including local transportation and housing.

When selecting candidates, preference will be given to students with no prior experience working in the above regions, but isn’t a requirement. However, candidates for the fellowship must demonstrate that they are well-prepared to take full advantage of the opportunity.


SUMMER 2020 INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTIONS
 
Access Afya: Social Media and Communications Intern
Who we are:
Access Afya is a social enterprise in Nairobi, Kenya, that delivers primary health care in the poorest communities in Kenya. We take a chain of low-cost micro-clinics as anchors to our model, with a mobile field health team that reaches people in the places where they already spend their time - such as schools and factories.
Access Afya is growing and we are looking to bring on board the best and brightest people to join our team. We have served over one hundred thousand people with reliable healthcare and are continuing to grow and innovate our model. Our team is bound together by a common, compelling purpose, based on the shared values of: Self-drive, Integrity, Resilience, Reliability and Empathy.

About the role:
The successful candidate will work closely with management and relevant team leads to support Access Afya internal and external communications strategies. You will write and disseminate publicity material, respond to inquiries from the public and the media. You will help contribute to our thought leadership through professional and interesting written communications.

What you will do:
  1. Write one thought leadership piece for dissemination through Access Afya outlets. Try and get this picked up by other outlets too.
  2. Collaborate with the relevant team members to understand who the Access Afya target audience is and then communicating with them on the in the appropriate channels.
  3. Understanding and expanding target audience in order to maximize on online visibility that can contribute to sales of the company’s products.
  4. Run social media channels to enhance audience engagement.
  5. Providing regular and accurate reports and analysis that clearly demonstrates return on investment (ROI) of the various marketing and communication activities.
  6. Writing of news’ letters, articles and reports on the company website, LinkedIn or any other media platforms focused on Access Afya branding and communications aspects.

 You are:
  1. A creative and an out of the box thinker who likes to express yourself!
  2. Keen to use at least basic analytical skills to generate insights.
  3. Organized and self-driven. You do not need (or want) a lot of direction.
  4. Incredibly excited to spend time with a team creating the future of healthcare for urban Africa.
  5. Ready to dive in and get to know our awesome team, even if helping with a clinic launch or design workshop isn’t directly in your job description.
  6. You can write well and can use a computer for blogging, social media; ideally you are familiar with tools to manage online communications such as hootsuite.

Mela Artisans: Summer Marketing Intern
Mela Artisans is looking for a qualified intern to join our marketing/advertising team.
This intern should be prepared to work in a fast-paced team environment and will finish
the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of marketing,
merchandising, sales and operations.
 
Responsibilities
·       Assist in the creation of content creation, website maintenance, email campaigns,
·       online (social media) promotion, etc.
·       Assist with the fulfillment of orders
·       Assist with the preparation and completion of marketing campaigns and materials
·       Perform analysis of marketing and sales data
·       Seek and analyze competitor marketing and sales materials both on and offline
·       Prepare presentations
·       Open and sort mail
·       Enter contact information and products into contact management systems and other
·       platforms
·       Provide support to social media efforts
·       Monitor social media for trending topics to utilize on social media channels
·       Maintain tracking report of public relations activity

Requirements
·       Undergraduate student majoring in Sales, Marketing, or Advertising
·       Excellent verbal and written communication skills
·       Extensive knowledge of social media marketing, digital advertising and retail
·       Driven and hard-working
·       Ability to take direction and multi-task
·       PowerPoint, Word and Excel experience a plus
