Amherst Select – Multicultural Resource Center Intern - 2019

Mission:
The Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) works to support students who identify as *people of color (POC) at Amherst College by providing a place for community building and resources to navigate institutional structures. Rooted in the framework of intersectionality, the MRC serves as a space where students of color can celebrate their identity and participate in conversations that expand our collective understanding of racialized experiences. The MRC works to interrogate systems of racial inequity, to promote racially just communities, and to honor the historic and present-day resilience of POC." 

*we use people of color here as a collective term for individuals belonging to racially minoritized group(s) including Latinx/o/a, Black, Asian, Indigenous/First Nations, Pacific Islanders, and those racialized outside of whiteness. 

Description
This summer, gain experience as an intern in the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) learning about center operations, developing social justice initiatives and programs, as well as center research and other special projects. Receive one-on-one mentoring from an experienced student affairs professional and develop transferable skills for any field.

Intern will work within a cohort model with interns from CDSL, WGC, QRC, CISE and will participate in group activities including shared readings, trainings, and social outings.

As the MRC continues to write its history, present and future, we are looking for an intern that is interested in research, archival work, and writing. We are also seeking an intern who is interested in initiatives and programs supporting and centering communities of color, justice-based work, and/or exploring a career in higher education administration. We are seeking an intern who has a basic understanding of systems, race/racism and intersectionality and who can work independently and enthusiastically bringing fresh ideas and creativity to the center.

In addition to serving as the MRC summer intern, this role will also serve as a Social Justice Leadership LEAP leader during Amherst College’s 2019 Orientation Program.
 
Important Dates:
The MRC internship will take place Monday, June 17, 2019 through Friday, August 9, 2019. The position resumes on August 25th, when the SJL LEAP training begins. The SJL component of this position will take place Sunday, August 25, through Sunday, September 1.
 
Compensation:
While the internship is unpaid, the intern selected for this position may apply for funding through the college's Summer Experience Funding Program.

Approximate Hours Per Week : 25-35

Qualifications
  • Current Amherst College student (First-Year, Sophomore, Junior), not currently committed to Orientation Programming as an orientation leader (OL)
  • Strong personal commitment to historically and presently marginalized communities and to the MRC’s mission
  • Dedication to creating inclusive community and interweaving intersectional identity-based social justice work with international reflection
  • Willingness to be vulnerable, open, and honest with new students
  • Creative, and highly adaptable to address needs in the moment
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, at distance (digitally), and in-person.
  • Responsible, organized, accountable, and able to meet deadlines
  • Working knowledge of Google Apps, Microsoft Office programs (PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, etc.)
